What is solitaire?

Solitaire (also called patience) is a family of card games for one player: you arrange a shuffled deck into order by following a few simple rules. The version most people mean by “solitaire” is Klondike, the classic game with seven columns and four foundations. Spider Solitaire is the other big favourite.

Classic solitaire: Klondike

Move all 52 cards to the four foundations, one per suit, building from Ace up to King. On the seven table columns, build down in alternating colours and turn over face-down cards as you free them. Only a King can fill an empty column. Turn 1 turns over one stock card at a time; Turn 3 turns over three, and only the top one can be played.

Spider Solitaire

Spider Solitaire uses two decks in ten columns. Build runs from King down to Ace in one suit; each complete run leaves the table, and you win when all eight are gone. Choose one suit for a relaxed game, two suits for a real challenge or four suits for the full test.
